Artist biography & CV

Angelica Markén was born in Västerås in 1974 and grew up in Sätra Brunn, a spa resort dating back to the 18th century. Her fascination for history began early, and was nourished by the legends of her native region, along with visits to the sewing studio at the theatre where her mother worked. Markén particularly recalls how, as a child, she watched the preparations for a performance in an 18th-century setting. The wigs, gowns and jewellery, and Honoré Fragonard’s classical painting The Swing, which adorned the poster for the play, were probably the start of her life-long love for the beauty and magic of times gone by. Markén has described the experience as a liberating realisation that the world of fairytales can exist even for adults. The family often went on outings to palaces and manors, where drawing was a natural part of the activities. Palaces in particular are a fundamental inspiration in Angelica Markén’s oeuvre. In the palace environment, architecture, antiques, life stories, splendour and art history meet.

Markén has a broad education in media, art and scientific illustration at university level. In recent years, she has attended courses in furniture and style history and in silver jewellery making. She has worked with TV production and as an art teacher. As a teacher, she encouraged her students to trust their own creative abilities. Markén has been a full-time artist since 2006, painting, exhibiting and selling her art in Sweden and internationally. She has participated in several jury-selected exhibitions. Her work has been shown in museums, galleries, pride festivals and palaces. She has been featured in articles and TV interviews, and has lectured on art. Markén has been highly appreciated by art buyers and gallery visitors over the years. Her personality and her work have also inspired writers and other artists.

A characteristic feature of Markén is how her spontaneous painterly style makes traditional motifs contemporary. Her imagery often incorporates a multifaceted tension between the burlesque palette and the subtly serious subject matter. Women are a recurring motif, but Markén’s pictures also feature eroticism, portraiture, the supernatural, palatial settings and her own family history. A common theme in her paintings is life and mortality. The interplay between techniques, colour combinations and subject matter imbue Markén’s vibrant works with a unique expressive quality that leads us intuitively to ask what is hidden behind the facades and the life stories.
Angelica Markén lists the 16th-century Queen Elizabeth I of England and the author Virginia Woolf’s fictive character Orlando as two of her principal role models. Other important influences are the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who combines punk and classical beauty, and the 18th-century painter François Boucher’s exuberant scenes. Markén collects portraits and admires artists who can convey the essence of human expression. Many of these are found in her favourite museum, the National Portrait Gallery in London. What lies closest to her heart, however, is pictures of women. She describes her female portraits as follows:

“I find that documentations of women’s lives are missing in the history books and archives. Women have not had the same opportunities as men, and have therefore not been documented to the same extent. With oils and acrylics, I travel in time and rescue the forgotten ladies. I love being a woman, and to me paintings of women are a powerful, enjoyable and important journey!”
